Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers play a vital role in the operation of Lydia’s House!
There are many ways that you can get involved in our program, including direct services (those programs involving women and children) and indirect service (examples: gardening, data entry, construction, cleaning). Lydia’s House has a small staff, compared to the amount of residents that we serve. Our volunteers partner with us to bring quality services and much needed resources to bring hope and healing to our families.
If you are not able to find a volunteer opportunity that fits your skills and interest, please let us know if you have a creative idea that you would like to see put into action. If we cannot find an opportunity of interest, please take a moment to look at our Partner Agency page. Changing the culture of how society addresses domestic violence takes more than a few passionate individuals. We are proud to support each of our partners listed and they reach out to survivors of domestic violence in many vital ways. If you ever considered volunteering for the domestic violence hotline, mentoring a survivor of sexual violence or even partnering with batterers that are in counseling; we encourage you to join the movement against domestic violence and give them a call.
Lydia’s House prefers that volunteers make a 6 month or one semester volunteer commitment. We do not have any specific time requirement for volunteers, but due to the nature of our program, we need to maintain the consistency and continuity of our volunteer groups.
The application process includes the following steps for all volunteers:
- Complete the application packet: Volunteer application, confidentiality agreement and basic background check
- Brief interview, no longer than 30 minutes with Volunteer Coordinator
- Orientation and tour of Lydia’s House, which will include the volunteer training packet
Direct Service Requirements:
If volunteers desire to work with children or women, they must complete Joint Orientation Training, hosted by St. Louis Eliminating Violence Against Women Network (SLEVAWN). Lydia’s House partners with SLEVAWN to host training sessions in January, June and August. Training must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in direct- service with our residents. The training is held after business hours at Maryville University.
