COMMUNITY ADVOCACY

Speaking out to raise awareness of domestic violence in our communities.

Statistics have shown 1 in 4 women will be affected by domestic violence in their lifetime. Despite this staggering and devastating reality, domestic violence is one of the most under-reported crimes. There are numerous barriers which can delay or discourage a victim from seeking necessary help. At the same time, many individuals are unfamiliar with the signs of an abusive relationship and may not know how to help a friend or loved one in need. This is why education is critical to raising awareness and facilitating better outcomes for survivors of domestic violence.

Lydia’s House welcomes community groups in the greater St. Louis area to request a speaker or other domestic violence resources for meetings, events and professional training. We do our best to accommodate these requests as our schedules allow. To request a speaker for your event, please contact our development coordinator, at development@lydiashouse.org.

Making Connections to Life-Saving Resources

Knowledge has the power to save lives. For the general public, increased awareness of domestic violence can help provide the tools to identify a loved one in danger. It is also critically important for victims to know where to go when they need help — and how to develop a plan to ensure they can arrive safely with their children and any pets. Lydia’s House advocates, staff and volunteers work tirelessly to ensure women and children in need have access to online and in-person resources, including crisis hotlines in St. Louis and the surrounding counties.

Building a Life of Hope

“I really struggled when I first came to Lydia’s House, but the staff helped me learn from my mistakes instead of making me feel bad about them. My staff advocate helped me to set goals and stay focused, because I wanted a better life for my girls. Although I was finally able to move into my own apartment, I still go to support groups and meet with my advocate. Their support has truly been a blessing in my life. I finally feel safe, and I’m so glad that my girls will know how to love without pain.”
