Stories of Hope

Who are the women and children at Lydia’s House? They are me, and they are you. They are all of us. Each person at Lydia’s
House was born with hopes and dreams and desires and needs. They love their children, and they want the best for them. They enjoy sunshine and gentle rain. They like comfortable beds and warm coats. And they enjoy laughing and hugging and being silly.

And like most of us, each of the women fell in love. And each believed that the person who said they would love them back actually meant it. Just like you and me, each woman wanted to be loved in a way that made her feel special and safe.

But the women and children who find themselves at Lydia’s House did not find safety with the person they loved. Their relationships became dangerous, and in some cases, they were nearly lethal. But each of the women at Lydia’s House were able to get out alive, though perhaps physically injured and/or emotionally scarred.

One of the most rewarding aspects of working at Lydia’s House is watching traumatized and desperate lives transition into those who not only survive, but who certainly thrive in the wake of devastating violence and abuse. Each journey from victim to survivor to one who thrives includes a powerful experience of a woman regaining control and ownership of her destiny.

Some of the women have volunteered to share stories both as a means of healing and for the learning process of others. Please honor and celebrate each woman who has generously chosen to open her life to the public domain. Check back soon for their stories to be posted.
